PROPERTY ROOM

If a citizen’s property finds its way into police custody without their knowledge, the Property Room will make a good faith effort to identify and notify the owner via letter or telephone call.

PICKING UP MY PROPERTY?

PROCESS:

  • You need to contact the Property Room to set-up a date and time to pick up your property.
  • Some items of property will require special handling instructions
  • Picture identification is required in all circumstances.
  • Proof of ownership and/or loss may be required.  (Proof would include a police report documenting the theft or loss of the item, a receipt showing the description of the item at the time of purchase, anything with a description and serial number with the owner's name, etc.)

If an item was collected under the command of a search warrant, by law, a court order specifically addressing property return must be obtained to retrieve the property. Your attorney may address this in court on your behalf.

If a firearm is taken under the command of an order of protection, the firearm may not be returned until the case is dismissed. A certified copy of the order with a raised seal showing the dismissal must be presented per mandate from the State’s Attorney’s Office. The person taking possession of the firearm must have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card if an Illinois resident.

All property releases, firearm or otherwise, must be approved by administration before release. Please do not show up directly from court, or prior to making an appointment.
