On June 13, 2019, Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Will County Adult Detention Facility for a report of a male inmate who had attempted to hang himself in his cell. Upon arrival at the ADF, deputies were notified by correctional personnel that the Joliet Fire Department had revived the inmate and were transporting him to St. Joseph Hospital.

Initial reports indicate that a Correctional Deputy conducted a headcount of the cell pod at 7:00pm. At that time, the inmate and his cellmate were both outside the cell. A short time later, when the Correctional Deputy was conducting a security check, he observed the inmate hanging by a bedsheet. The inmate was not breathing when the Correctional Deputy freed him. The Correctional Deputy immediately began CPR. He continued CPR while calling for medical assistance. ADF medical personnel arrived and took over emergency protocol procedures until Joliet Fire responded.

The inmate remains at St. Joseph Hospital and is in critical condition. The inmate has been in custody at the Adult Detention Facility for four weeks. He is being held on multiple felony charges that include home invasion, criminal trespass, and criminal damage to property, aggravated domestic battery charges, and violations of orders of protection.
The inmate’s name is not being released at this time.

As is standard procedure, the Will County Sheriff’s Investigation Division is investigating the incident.

On 06/03/2019, at approximately 10:25 AM, deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 26000 of South Klemme Road in Unincorporated Create Township in reference to a welfare check. 

The relative that had contacted the Sheriff’s Office had advised that the residents had not shown up to work, and were not picking up their phones.  Deputies were provided access to the residence by a family member.  Upon deputies making entry into the attached garage, deputies located a female victim, age 59, inside of a vehicle. 

The female victim advised deputies that her husband was in the trunk of the vehicle.  The female victim was transported to a local area hospital and is in stable condition.  The male victim, age 63, was pronounced deceased on the scene. 

The female victim stated that two masked males entered her residence the previous evening for the purposes of robbing the victims. 

This is an active death investigation, that is in its early stages.  When appropriate, the Will County Sheriff’s Office will put out additional information.   

On Monday, May 27, 2019 at approximately 4:10 AM, the Joliet Police Department Dispatch Center received a call from a third-party stating that a domestic battery was in progress on the 1200 block of Justice Lake Drive in the City of Joliet.  Joliet Police Officers responded to the scene, and observed the residence on fire.  

Entry was made into the residence, and officers were confronted with a hostage situation.  The offender was armed with a handgun, and officers were fired upon by the offender.  During the course of the incident, an officer fired at the offender.  Three officers were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The offender was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the victim was transported to Silver Cross Hospital.  The identities of all parties involved are not being released at this time, pending notification to the family.  The Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident, and further information will be forthcoming when appropriate.

Members that responded to this incident from the Will Grundy Major Crimes Task consisted of police officers from the following agencies:  Bolingbrook Police Department, Channahon Police Department, Coal City Police Department, Lockport Police Department, Morris Police Department, Naperville Police Department, New Lenox Police Department, Romeoville Police Department, Shorewood Police Department, and the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Will County Sheriff’s Department to Participate in Regional Route 59 Traffic Safety Initiative on Thursday

Will County, Ill. — On Thursday, May 9, 2019, the Will County Sheriff’s Department will join with numerous police agencies in northern Illinois to conduct a traffic safety initiative along the Route 59 corridor.

 From Lake County to Will County, participating agencies will use education and traffic enforcement in an effort to increase the safety of motorists using the thoroughfare. Will County Sheriff’s Departments efforts will concentrate on speed, distracted driving and occupant restraint violations as well as other safety violations. 

The following departments are expected to participate in the initiative: Naperville Police Department, Warrenville Police Department, Plainfield Police Department, Streamwood Police Department, Shorewood Police Department, Joliet Police Department, Wauconda Police Department, Will County Sheriff’s Department, and Cook County among others. Each jurisdiction will implement their own enforcement action based upon the needs of their communities.

The Will County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all motorists to always drive safely by using proper restraints, following the rules of the road and avoiding distraction.

In conjunction with the month of April’s “Alcohol Awareness Month”, the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and the Will County Sheriff’s Office, successfully conducted two initiatives throughout Will County in its efforts to bring attention to the illegal purchase of alcohol to minors and to adults who illegally purchase alcohol for minors.

On Saturday, April 13th, six area students and members from the Coalition completed a “Sticker Shock Campaign” at liquor store establishments in Homer Glen, Lockport, Joliet, and Plainfield. The team placed 455 bottle hanger tags and 364 stickers on individual bottles and cases of alcohol warning buyers against allowing minors to purchase alcohol, the use of fake ID’s, and warning adults who provide alcohol to minors.

On April 5th and April 20th, the Will County Sheriff’s Office, alongside youth participants, conducted alcohol sales compliance checks in twenty-one liquor sale establishments throughout unincorporated areas of Will County. This initiative reminds retail store owners and their employees that it is illegal to sell alcohol to minors. Of the twenty-one stores, four establishments sold alcohol to minors. They are Circle K Store, 12819 W. 143rd St. in Homer Glen; Homer Liquors, 13011 W. 143rd St. in Homer Glen; Speedway Gas, 12007 W. 159th St. in Homer Glen; and New Lenox Food & Liquors, 13410 Route 6 in Mokena.

The Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is funded in part by the Drug Free Communities grant and private donations to help promote awareness, education and community-wide prevention initiatives as a means to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug use by youth. The Coalition partners with local businesses, churches, law enforcement, healthcare providers, schools, local government, media, civic groups, social services, substance abuse agencies, youth and parents to make an impact.

The Sheriff's Office will be visible around the schools and in the area of Weber Road, Taylor and Budler Roads. We are notifying the public that there will be loud noises and sirens, several emergency vehicles and several people around the schools. SWAT vehicles will also be visible and will continue training on site until 10pm.

School Administrators have notified the parents and staff of District 202, however, please share this information with your neighbors and friends.
