programs. These programs are available to all Will County residents, organizations,
businesses, schools, and church groups. For details or to schedule any

A
summary of the available programs:
Personal
Safety for Women, Seniors, or Adults in General-
These personal safety programs are designed to help women, seniors,
and adults become more aware of criminal activity that may impact them,
and learn strategies to lessen their potential of becoming a crime victim.
Sexual Assault Prevention-
This program is designed to lessen the chances of becoming a victim
of sexual assault, make individuals more aware of their surroundings,
and what to do if they become a victim of sexual assault.
Neighborhood
Watch- This program familiarizes
individuals with the concept that Neighborhood Watch programs encourage
neighbors to protect each other's lives and property by securing their
own homes and reporting suspicious activities to authorities. Individually,
residents can take many effective precautions against crime, but active
Neighborhood Watch Groups have an even greater deterrent effect.
Home/Business Security-
This program informs the public that burglary is a crime of opportunity.
If you take away the opportunity or educate the public to be security
conscious, it will lessen their chances of becoming a victim of a burglary.
Street Gang Awareness-
This program will heighten the general public's awareness of the street
gang phenomenon through education covering the dynamics of street gangs;
and, provide an insight into the tactical measures used by the Will
County Sheriff's Office to combat gang activity.
Stranger Danger-
This program makes young people aware of the dangers presented by strangers,
to identify dangerous situations and how to respond to them.

emphasizing defensive riding.

provides parents with a quick way to give the police the necessary
information needed when searching for a lost or missing child. The
Child Identification Card is the size of an Illinois Driver's License
and contains the following information: child's name, address, date
of birth, hair & eye color, height, weight, social security number,
distinguishing marks, medical information, thumb prints, and a photo
of the child. These cards are given back to the parent(s) an they
are advised to keep them in the parent's wallet or purse. The Will
County Sheriff's Office does not keep a copy of the Child Identification
Card.
Operation Lifesaver-
This program is dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries, and fatalities
at a highway railway crossing. Operation Lifesaver maintains a "3-E"
philosophy focusing on: Education, Engineering, and Enforcement. The
program can be instructed to all ages.
Domestic Violence-
This program shows warning signs of an abuser. It also has information
on how to get out of an abusive situation. There is good information
on how to protect yourself in working with someone who is in an abusive
situation.
Date Rape Drugs- Talks
about the three drugs that are being used and how to prevent yourself
from being a victim.
Computer Safety on the Internet for Adults-
This program tells adults of the predators who lurk on the internet.
It will teach parents where to
place the computer for optimum security. Also explained are programs
that help parents monitor their children's access of the computer
and e-mail.
Computer Safety on the Internet for Children-
This program tells children how to protect themselves on the internet
and in "chat" rooms. Children are told how the people they
talk to over the computer, should be treated just like any other stranger--with
caution! It also tells children how not to give out personal information
to strangers and what to do it they receive inappropriate e-mail.
Child Safety Seats-
Child Safety Seats are vital safety devices designed to work with
a vehicle's safety belt system to provide maximum protection to children
in the event of a crash. Child safety belt systems provide a "ride-down"
benefit. They allow the child's body to stop as the vehicle is slowing,
reducing the forces on the child's body, and preventing contact with
hard surfaces inside the vehicle, with other occupants, and with the
road or other vehicles.
To
provide effective crash protection, the child safety seat must be firmly
attached to the vehicle and the child must be firmly secured in the child
safety seat. It is critical that the child safety seat be used correctly
and maintained in good working order. Therefore it is imperative for parents
to have their children safety seats inspected at least once per year or
if their vehicle is involved in a crash to immediately purchase a new
child safety seat. Any parent who wished to have their child safety seat
inspected, free of charge, may contact the Will County Sheriff's Office
at 815-727-8568 to set up an appointment or may attend
any Child Safety Seat Checkpoint.
