Traffic Enforcement

Traffic Section Deputies patrol the environs of Will County to promote traffic safety and enforce traffic laws.  Beside speed enforcement, the Traffic Section utilizes other tools for collection of data for high traffic crash areas which is brought to them through concerns of the citizens of Will County.  This allows enforcement in problematic areas.  Traffic Deputies patrol in unmarked squad cars equipped with dual antenna moving radar units.  These cars are also equipped with hand held laser units.  Enforcement is prioritized to areas where there is a high rate of traffic crashes.

Other tools used to combat speeding vehicles include:

·           Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer (SMART)
·           CASBAR Program (COPSA Areas)

Speed Trailers

The Traffic Section operates two Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailers.  (SMART).  These trailers monitor and display speeds of approaching vehicles, using radar attached to a large electronic display panel.  It is also equipped with an onboard computer system that can record speed and traffic counts over an extended period of time.  These trailers are often placed in areas at homeowner’s request in an effort to slow traffic and to also provide data pertaining to times that traffic violations occur.  These trailers have also been successfully deployed in school zones throughout Will County.

The Traffic Section is also equipped with traffic counters that can record speed and traffic counts over an extended period of time.

Two Portable Traffic/Speed Counters were purchased in 2005.  This adds capability to conduct speed and traffic count surveys in subdivisions and with these counters were are able to record speed and traffic counts over an extended period of time.

To report a continuing traffic problem with speeding in your area, please complete the Complaint form accessible on our web-site.

Motorcycle Unit

The Will County Sheriff’s Office has a new motorcycle unit to enhance the Enforcement Division.  Four new Harley Davidson 1000cc motorcycles, designed for use by law enforcement officers, have been outfitted.

This unit was formed in May of  2000 and its members have been attached to the Traffic Section on a part-time basis as time allows from April to October each year.

One of the Deputies assigned to the Traffic Section received Motorcycle Training during 2004 and is now an integral part of the Unit.  In 2005, 964 hours were devoted to the Motorcycle Program.

Sheriff’s Office personnel have completed a rigorous two-week training program, conducted by the Northwestern University Traffic Institute and Harley Davidson, Inc., certifying their competency in operation of motorcycles.  Funds for the purchase of the motorcycles, equipment, and training were obtained from fines collected through an on-going overweight truck enforcement  effort.

The Motorcycle Unit, a seasonal specialized unit of the Traffic Division, will be flexible in its tasks.  The primary function of the Motorcycle Unit is traffic enforcement and traffic control.  The unit will be utilized at large public events or concerts.  Citizens’ complaints regarding an excessive number of speeding autos or other dangerous vehicular situations will be investigated by motorcycle Deputies.  D.U.I.  checkpoints, ceremonial events or parades are additional duties assigned to the Motorcycle Unit.

Traffic Trailer

With funding from an IDOT Grant, a 16 foot trailer was purchased to be used exclusively for Child Car Seat Check Points. The trailer, which has full Will County Sheriff’s Department markings, has been used for check points sponsored by our agency, as well as in cooperative efforts with other agencies.

Over 90% of child safety seats are installed incorrectly.  For a free inspection or installation, call the Will County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Section at (815) 727-3263.
